Some paintings begin with a question. Others begin with paint.
I always begin with more than will remain.
I've come to realize I enjoy working in the ill-defined. It's how I paint.
Every painting asks something different. My role is to recognize its needs, whether they confirm my intentions or change them. That is best done when I get out of the way.
The work stays alive as long as the questions remain open. Over time, the answers accumulate until they bring closure.
The painting is what remains.
